A few weeks ago we were guests of Donatella “Lella” at Agriturismo Abbacca-Là in Aquilea, few kilometers from Lucca.

How did we find Abbacca-Là?

I know Lella, thanks to my Seo Specialist job in Lucca and, once I saw the location and the services offered, I decided to spend a weekend with my wife and my daughter run away from the busy everyday life.

We arrived on Saturday morning around 10 am. Lella and her big dog welcome us with a huge smile on her lips. It’s a warm day, but all the green nature around us makes the weather a bit cooler, although the over 100 meters altitude above the sea level is not bad.

The house is a restored farmhouse with 3 guest apartments. Also Lella lives here in her own house with her husband.

The farmhouse the little-known valley of Valdottavo with breathtaking views of the Apennines mountains. A silent, green and lush valley just two steps from the city.

Aquilea is mainly well known for its festival: The Aquilea Soup Festival, which takes place every year in August (a must if you are in Lucca at that time).

But let’s go back to us…

Our apartment is the first in “appearance order”. Inside there is a double bed (for the occasion we also asked for an extra single bed), a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, TV, free WiFi and an outside area with a table where to eat in the cool evening.

The furniture is classic, typical of a Tuscan farmhouse. The typical furniture that you would find at my mom’s house or grandmother’s one. A dip in the memories.

The outdoor is really nice and detailed. Stones, flowers and plants everywhere and, for the guests of the last two apartments, a beautiful gazebo.

There is also an outdoor pool and a small heated whirlpool where me, Vanessa and the baby spendt the Saturday afternoon.

To do in the neighborhood

On foot there is the chance to get to the remains of the church of San Leonardo, an hermitage dating back to the VII century in Castellaccio. In half hour walk, most of the time on the road, but not very busy.

We preferred a walk on the road to Gugliano admiring the views that stood up to the plain of Lucca up to Compitese area and Mount Serra, right in front of where we were.

After the walk… dinner!

On our way back from the late afternoon walk, Lella made us find a nice dinner, ready to be enjoyed at the table outside, which we are going to describe shortly. We would like to point out that lunches and dinners are not normally served unless expressly requested. We had requested it … 😉

Let’s start with a basket of homemade bread and focaccia from Lella’s skilled hands (which also organizes cooking courses, especially for foreigners); a goodness overwhelmed. Obviously the focaccia disappears after a few seconds…

After a while a taste of appetizers arrived: a fresh cheese prepared the same morning, flavored with the unusual but very good lime, brushed olive olives (from the olive trees in the farmhouse!), And a tasty glass of Valgiano red wine. We really started on the right foot!

To follow, a pasta with basil, mint and almond pesto; this was also awesome!!! In the end, sage white chicken with fresh salad.

We could not miss the dessert A tasty “semifreddo” made by Lella, together with a tangerine liqueur that has “cleaned” the mouth as well. Hence, a dinner with counterfeits (also appreciated by our baby girl)!

In Aquilea the night is fresh and the sleep is sweet.

The morning comes fast and at our awakening Lella has prepared a nice table for guests in the kitchen of her house. A convivial table, shared with two Scottish families of tourists who came to the farm on Saturday night.

Lella’s breakfast

Breakfast is abundant, classic Italian, with homemade pies and jams, tea, coffee, cappuccino, cereals, fruit juices, etc …

We obviously had the exquisite cake and cappuccino, ready to enjoy Sunday with a couple of friends (the ones that already recommended Casa Ti Coltivo and Papà Ninuccio) up to 1000 meters (and 20 °C) in Campo Catino, above Vagli’s lake.

Taking stock of our weekend, we were only 20 miles from home, but it seemed to be really on vacation. For the welcome of the owners, whether for the comfort and the relaxation (although for a few days only) that the agriturismo has been able to infused us.

If you are looking for an holiday in the middle of the green, we highly recommend Agriturismo Abbacca-Là to those who want to spend a few days surrounded by nature, especially those who consider ecology and respect for nature a fundamental value of his life.
